CAFB's 2013 End of Year Report

April 4th, 2014

Dear friends and supporters,

I’m happy to report that the California Association of Food Banks has continued making great strides toward ending hunger in California. The following report contains an overview of our 2013 goals and accomplishments, as well as a look ahead toward what is shaping up to be a very exciting – if challenging – 2014.

We’re particularly proud of the fact that our Farm to Family program provided 140 million pounds of fresh, nutrient-dense crops to food banks, a record amount for the program. To put this number in perspective, that’s over 3,500 semi-truck loads full of fresh, nutritious produce. Our innovative Farm to Family model was recently recognized by the Walmart Foundation with a two-year, $500,000 grant to expand and replicate the program in California and beyond.

In light of the recent passage of the Affordable Care Act, we’ve been actively preparing to encourage California to expand CalFresh (food stamp) enrollment by leveraging new funds, technologies, and processes to ensure dual participation in both health and nutrition assistance programs for all qualified consumers. The attached report summarizes our efforts through the Alliance to Transform CalFresh as we work to capitalize on this historic opportunity.

As we look ahead, it’s clear that 2014 is shaping up to be a very challenging year. With the passage of a Farm Bill containing $8 billion in cuts to SNAP and one of the worst droughts in recent memory facing our state, CAFB is prepared to assist our member food banks as the need for food relief grows. Your continuing support helps ensure that CAFB is well-equipped to lead our membership through these difficult times ahead.

I’d like to close by thanking you on behalf of our member food banks, staff, and most importantly, the Californians we serve. Please accept my sincerest thanks for your support of the California Association of Food Banks as we continue our efforts to build a well-nourished California. We look forward to the day when no child or family must struggle to receive the food they need. As one of our supporters, you are a vital partner in our efforts.

Please join me as we celebrate CAFB’s 2013 accomplishments and look forward to the year ahead.

Sincerely,
Sue Sigler
Executive Director, CAFB
