Governor Brown Will Release Budget Revise on Thursday

Food Bankers Hope to See Improved CalFood Numbers

Sacramento – Governor Jerry Brown releases his 2017-18 Budget Revise today and California food bankers hope it includes funds for CalFood. Food bankers and anti-hunger advocates are requesting $17.5 million be added to the budget. An investment of this size would provide some 87.5 million meals to hungry Californians.

“We hope the Governor prioritizes ending hunger in the state budget,” said Andrew Cheyne, Director of Government Affairs at California Association of Food Banks. “Funding CalFood at our $17.5 million request provides approximately $3.25 per food insecure Californian – which is still far less than several of our peer states who have much higher SNAP participation.”

For one in eight Californians, including more than 2 million children, food banks are a critical source of nutrition. Even among CalFresh recipients, one-third rely on groceries from food banks. CalFood strengthens the emergency food network by enabling California food banks to purchase California-grown foods. Because food banks leverage great economies of scale, each dollar appropriated allows them to provide roughly five meals.

CalFood is also a great boon to California’s economy. Funds must be used to purchase and distribute foods grown or produced in California, benefiting the state’s agricultural sector. CalFood funding also increases economic activity by providing food for families in need who are able to spend dollars on non-food items in their communities.
