Here are some quick tips to make you feel more comfortable about approaching a client about telling their story.
Set the mood
No matter where you are, in a full warehouse, huddled in your cubicle, be sure to make your environment comfortable. Find a comfortable place for your client to sit that feels private, then offer them a warm beverage like tea or coffee and something to eat. Keep a box of tissues nearby — these are very personal stories, and tissues may be needed.
Reciprocity
You’ve already done something to help your client and people have an innate sense of reciprocation. By talking with you, they can feel like they are helping you.
Experience
Start by asking your client if they’ve told their story before. If they haven’t, mention you are working with others to tell their story. Sharing this information establishes a feeling of community, and after you’ve interviewed your client, they may feel comfortable telling others that it is a valuable thing to do.
Responsibility
Conjure up the greater good with your client. Mention that by telling their story they will be helping future generations of Californians who may need a safety net.
Small talk
Don’t skip the small talk. You probably know this from your regular work, but by sharing personal details, you will build trust with your client. If they like you and identify with you, the more likely they will want to help you collect stories.
Start small
If a client is hesitant about telling their story, start with a smaller ask, for example, request a statement about why CalFresh is important. Once you establish more trust, you can revisit the person to see if they are willing to give you more of their time.
