Los bancos de alimentos de California responden a la carga p\u00fablica"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:14px\">Yesterday, the Department of Homeland Security published the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2018\/10\/10\/2018-21106\/inadmissibility-on-public-charge-grounds\">proposed rule on public charge<\/a>. The proposed rule signficantly expands&nbsp;the list of&nbsp;programs to be considered in immigration public charge,including public benefits like SNAP, Medicaid, Medicare Part D and housing assistance&nbsp;that help low-income families meet basic needs like food, healthcare and housing&#8211;forcing immigrant families&nbsp;to make impossible choices between meeting basic needs and keeping their families together.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:14px\">Every day, food banks serve on the front lines of hunger, but we could never meet the need in our communities without a robust SNAP program, which helps&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/sites\/default\/files\/atoms\/files\/snap_factsheet_california.pdf\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\">&nbsp;put&nbsp;food within reach for our state\u2019s low-income families and helps lift over 4 million Californians out of poverty<\/a><span style=\"color:black\">.<\/span> Nationwide, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bread.org\/sites\/default\/files\/downloads\/2014_churches_hunger_fact_sheet.pdf\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\">federal nutrition programs provide 19 out of 20 emergency meals<\/a><span style=\"color:black\">, yet because SNAP benefits are inadequate to last the entire month, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/webdocs\/publications\/90029\/ap-079.pdf?v=0\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\">nearly 1 in 3 households still rely on food banks to make ends meet<\/a><span style=\"color:#000000\">. <a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/CAFB Farm Bill Infographic - Sept 2018.pdf\">5 million Californians already rely on food banks<\/a> and food banks&nbsp;struggle to meet the current need.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:Times New Roman,Times,serif\"><span style=\"font-size:14px\">The proposed rule further&nbsp;builds upon the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.migrationpolicy.org\/research\/chilling-effects-expected-public-charge-rule-impact-legal-immigrant-families\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\">chilling effect<\/a> that food banks and other emergency food providers have witnessed first-hand, with many families choosing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2018\/09\/03\/immigrants-nutrition-food-trump-crackdown-806292\" style=\"color:blue; text-decoration:underline\">disenroll or forego critical health and nutrition benefits<\/a> for fear of losing their legal pathway to stay in this country or being separated from their families.
