{"id":3378,"date":"2015-09-24T23:34:55","date_gmt":"2015-09-24T23:34:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost\/2015\/09\/24\/by-the-numbers-a-closer-look-at-californias-food-insecurity-and-poverty\/"},"modified":"2015-09-24T23:34:55","modified_gmt":"2015-09-24T23:34:55","slug":"by-the-numbers-a-closer-look-at-californias-food-insecurity-and-poverty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cafoodbanks.org\/es\/blog\/by-the-numbers-a-closer-look-at-californias-food-insecurity-and-poverty\/","title":{"rendered":"By the Numbers: A Closer Look at California\u2019s Food Insecurity and Poverty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Sarah Palmer DeFrank<\/em><br \/>\n<em>CAFB Policy Associate<\/em><\/p>\n<p>New data released by the USDA and the Census show that too many of California\u2019s children and families are living in poverty and experiencing food insecurity, highlighting the critical need to protect the programs proven to mitigate hunger and poverty in our state.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Food Insecurity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to new food insecurity data released this month by the USDA, <strong>California is among the top 5 food insecure states in the nation<\/strong>, with <strong>13.5% of households reporting food insecurity\u2014<\/strong>defined as having limited or uncertain access to adequate nutritious food<strong>\u2013and 5.1% reporting <em>very<\/em> low food insecurity<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>While new data reveal a slight improvement from Great Recession highs, the data are still worse than 10 years prior, wherein 12.4% of families reported being food insecure and 3.9% reported being very low food insecure.<\/p>\n<p>Nationally, the statistics are more dire\u2014nearly 1 in 4 households with children face hunger and rural households display higher rates of hunger than urban areas.<\/p>\n<p>You can see how California compares to other states <a href=\"http:\/\/frac.org\/pdf\/2015_09_09_usda_food_insecurity_bystate_2012_2014.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">aqu\u00ed<\/a>, or read the full <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/publications\/err-economic-research-report\/err194.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Household Food Security in the United States in<\/em>&nbsp;<em>2014 <\/em>report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pobreza<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Census recently released <a href=\"http:\/\/www.census.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/2015\/cb15-134.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">updated poverty statistics<\/a> about California, confirming what so many of our clients, neighbors, and fellow Californians have been experiencing: while parts of our economy may be recovering, many continue to struggle with <em>real<\/em> poverty and its related challenges.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More<\/strong> <strong>than 2 million California kids are living in poverty\u2014that\u2019s<\/strong> <strong>nearly 1 in 4!<\/strong> And with <strong>one in six Californians living in poverty<\/strong>, it\u2019s clear that we need a strong safety net to ensure that no one goes hungry.
