Amadeo, 71, and his wife Ana, 63, are a loving couple who live in Orange County. Until recently, they were not able to afford food on a consistent basis. Their restricted budget often led them to leave their apartment and seek out family members who might be able to share a meal. Sometimes they traveled to their daughter’s house and gleaned from her orange tree to eat or make juice so they wouldn’t go hungry. Some days they went without.
After he was laid off from his job, Amadeo unsuccessfully searched for employment. He became depressed that he couldn’t provide for his family. Additionally, his high blood pressure left him weak and fatigued when he didn’t get enough nourishment.
The couple applied for CalFresh, and Ana shared that the application process was very easy. She said, “The reality is, we needed to eat. Sometimes situations are tight and that’s when programs like this are necessary.” They can now purchase healthy items such as chicken, fruit, veggies, juice, and more. They both feel much better, physically and mentally.
