Advocates Celebrate 40th Anniversary of Food Stamp Act

Food Bankers and Anti-Hunger Advocates Throw Birthday Party at the State Capitol

Sacramento– There is a different kind of birthday party being thrown on the lawn of California’s state capitol today. Food bankers and anti-hunger advocates are celebrating the 40th anniversary of the modern food stamps program on the north lawn. Food stamps, now called Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or CalFresh in California, was signed into law on September 29, 1977. The Food Stamp Act had significant bipartisan support and is a testament to successful public policy making.

The event will feature everything a classic birthday party should have; including cake, balloons, birthday songs, and a photo booth. The public is welcome to stop by to celebrate the program’s success in lifting people out of poverty by snapping a selfie in the photo booth or by recording a testimonial of their connection to the program.

WHAT: 40th Birthday Party for SNAP/CalFresh

WHEN: Wednesday, September 13, 2017, 9:00 – 11:00 am

WHERE: North side lawn, California State Capitol

WHO: California Association of Food Banks and Western Center on Law & Poverty

MEDIA OPPORTUNITY: Andrew Cheyne, Director of Government Affairs for California Association of Food Banks, is an expert on anti-hunger policy and will be on site for interviews.
